JPMorgan Hedged Equity Laddered Overlay ETF (HELO) Research

The JPMorgan Hedged Equity Laddered Overlay ETF (HELO) aims for capital appreciation by investing in large U.S. companies. Concurrently, it employs a continuous market hedging strategy, specifically a put spread collar. While the fund strives to replicate the sector weighting of the S&P 500, the advisor retains the flexibility to make discretionary choices regarding individual stock selections, potentially adjusting their specific weightings. The core of HELO's hedging mechanism is a "laddered" options exposure, achieved by acquiring put options on ETFs designed to track the S&P 500 Index. These option positions are strategically layered across several three-month cycles, with new segments initiated each month. This structured approach means that different parts of the options portfolio expire and are re-established on an ongoing basis. The put spread component involves purchasing long put options at a higher strike price while concurrently selling short put options at a lower strike price. To partially fund the cost of these put spreads, the fund sells call options. This call-writing activity, however, places a cap on the potential upside returns the fund can achieve. It's important to note that this strategy is not designed to yield the highest returns in strongly rising markets, nor may it provide substantial protection during minor market downturns.
